Basics of Tagalog

Tagalog Made Easy for Beginners — Learn Essential Phrases, Grammar, and Vocabulary · by Milany Guab

How to Use This Book

1. Start at Part 1 if you are new to Tagalog sounds. Spend extra time on glottal stops and stress — they change meaning.

2. Learn frames, not isolated words. In Parts 2–5, copy each model sentence, then swap names, places, and times.

3. Master markers early. Part 4 (ang / ng / sa) is the structural backbone. Revisit it while you practice verbs.

4. Practice out loud. Read model sentences aloud. Rhythm and po/opo matter as much as vocabulary; when you can, check your pronunciation with a native speaker or reliable spoken Tagalog.

5. Use the Reference as a desk guide: core glossary, verb aspect tables, and answer keys for Part 7.

Suggested pace: 4–6 weeks for Parts 1–5 if studying 30–45 minutes a day; Parts 6–7 in parallel once you can form simple sentences.

Chapter 1.1

Welcome to Tagalog

What is Tagalog?

Tagalog is an Austronesian language spoken as a first language by a quarter of the population of the Philippines, and as a second language by the vast majority. It forms the foundation of Filipino, the national language of the country, and boasts a rich literary, oral, and cultural heritage.

Its roots trace deep into maritime Southeast Asia, blending local island traditions with centuries of linguistic influence from foreign trade, Spanish colonization, and modern international interaction. For anyone stepping into this vibrant linguistic world, understanding Tagalog opens the door not just to vocabulary and complex grammar, but to the warm, relational culture of the Filipino people.

Linguistic Insight

The word “Tagalog” is derived from the native term taga-ilog, meaning “river dweller” (from taga- meaning “native of” and ilog meaning “river”). It originally designated the inhabitants who settled along the fertile banks of the Pasig River and Laguna de Bay.

A Brief History

Tagalog is a member of the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family — a sprawling group of some 1,200 languages spoken from Madagascar to Easter Island, and from Taiwan to New Zealand. Its closest linguistic relatives within the Philippines are the languages of the Central Philippine subgroup, including Bikol, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, and Waray-Waray.

Before the arrival of Spanish colonizers in 1565, Tagalog was written using Baybayin, an indigenous syllabic script derived from the Brahmic scripts of South Asia. Baybayin consisted of seventeen characters — three vowels and fourteen consonant–vowel combinations — and was used for personal letters, poetry, and short records. Though Baybayin fell out of everyday use during the colonial period, it remains a powerful cultural symbol today and is experiencing a modest revival in art, tattoos, and youth culture.

Three and a half centuries of Spanish rule (1565–1898) left a lasting imprint on Tagalog vocabulary. Thousands of loanwords entered the language — kumusta (from cómo está), silya (silla), mesa, plato, kwento (cuento), pera (peso/money) — while Tagalog grammar itself remained fundamentally Austronesian. Later, American colonial administration (1898–1946) introduced English, which continues to supply modern technical, scientific, and pop-culture vocabulary.

Table 1.1.1 — Timeline of Tagalog’s Development
Period	Key Developments
Pre-1565	Tagalog spoken along the Pasig River and Laguna de Bay. Written in the Baybayin syllabary. Rich oral tradition of riddles (bugtong), proverbs (salawikain), and epic poetry.
1565–1898	Spanish colonial period. First Tagalog grammar and dictionary compiled by Spanish friars. Heavy lexical borrowing from Spanish. Baybayin gradually replaced by the Latin alphabet.
1898–1946	American period. English introduced into schools and government. Tagalog becomes a literary and revolutionary language (Rizal, Bonifacio, Balagtas).
1937–1987	Tagalog selected as the basis of the national language. Successive naming: Wikang Pambansa (1937) → Pilipino (1959) → Filipino (1987 Constitution).
Present day	Filipino is the national lingua franca, taught nationwide, and spoken by over 100 million people across the archipelago and diaspora.

Tagalog vs. Filipino

A common point of curiosity — and occasional confusion — for new language learners is the distinction between Tagalog and Filipino. While they are closely intertwined and mutually intelligible in daily speech, they carry distinct formal definitions:

Tagalog

Scope: Specific regional language indigenous to Southern and Central Luzon.
Vocabulary: Native Austronesian core with traditional grammatical structures.
Nature: Historical and ethnic basis of the modern national language.

Filipino

Scope: Official national language (lingua franca) of the entire Philippines.
Vocabulary: Dynamic; absorbs loanwords from English, Spanish, and regional dialects.
Nature: Modern, constitutional, and continuously evolving national standard.

Think of Tagalog as the foundational pillar, and Filipino as the modern, evolving national standard built directly upon it. For learners, mastering Tagalog provides the authentic core grammar and roots necessary to speak and understand Filipino effortlessly.

Practical Rule of Thumb

In everyday conversation, most Filipinos use the terms interchangeably. If you learn Tagalog well, you can read Filipino newspapers, watch Filipino television, and hold conversations in Filipino without any additional study. The distinction matters mainly in academic, legal, and constitutional contexts.

Where Tagalog is Spoken

While Tagalog’s cultural heartland is centered in central and southern Luzon — including Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon — its geographic and social reach extends far beyond these traditional regional boundaries.

Table 1.1.2 — Domains of Tagalog Usage
Region / Domain	Role of Tagalog	Primary Centers
Tagalog Heartland	Primary native spoken language in daily life and commerce.	Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Bulacan
Philippine Archipelago	National lingua franca, national television, and public education.	Visayas, Mindanao, Urban Centers
Global Diaspora	Community language for family, culture, and social networks.	United States, Middle East, Canada, Australia

Across the Philippine archipelago, Tagalog serves as a second language for tens of millions of Filipinos whose first languages are regional tongues like Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, or Waray-Waray. It acts as the primary bridge for nationwide communication, pop culture, media broadcasts, and governance.

Regional Dialects of Tagalog

Manila / Metro Manila Tagalog — the prestige variety and the base of standard Filipino.
Batangas Tagalog — distinct intonation and archaic vocabulary; often considered the “deepest” form.
Bulacan Tagalog — regarded as the literary standard; the dialect of Francisco Balagtas.
Rizal & Laguna Tagalog — close to the Manila standard.
Cavite Tagalog — historically significant as the language of the 1896 Revolution.
Marinduque & Mindoro Tagalog — island varieties with Visayan influence.

The Sound of Tagalog

Tagalog is syllable-timed — each syllable gets roughly equal weight, unlike English’s stress-timed rhythm. Vowels are always pronounced clearly: a = “ah,” e = “eh,” i = “ee,” o = “oh,” u = “oo.” Spelling is phonetic — there are no silent letters.

Stress and glottal stops carry meaning:

pito / pitó

Stress on first syllable: “whistle”
Stress on final syllable: “seven”

hapon / hapón

Stress on first syllable: “afternoon”
Stress on final syllable: “Japanese person”

Why Learn Tagalog?

Family connection. Speak with parents, grandparents, and relatives in their heritage language.
Travel and immersion. Over 7,600 islands reward travelers who can greet and ask directions locally.
Work and business. Opens doors in local companies, NGOs, and community organizations.
Culture and media. Filipino cinema, music, and teleseryes are richer in the original language.
Linguistic fascination. Tagalog’s focus system offers a genuinely different way of thinking about language.
Service and mission work. Medical, educational, and religious workers benefit enormously.

Chapter 1.2

Alphabet, Pronunciation & Stress

Tagalog spelling is close to phonetic: nearly every letter has one sound, and once you know the sounds you can read any word aloud. The traditional 20-letter Abakada (a, b, k, d, e, g, h, i, l, m, n, ng, o, p, r, s, t, u, w, y) covers native words. The modern Filipino alphabet has 28 letters; it adds c, f, j, ñ, q, v, x, z for loanwords and names such as Cebu, Filipino, and Jose.

The Five Vowels

Vowels are short, clear, and never reduced to a vague “uh” as in English. Hold the mouth shape steady for the whole vowel; do not glide into a second sound.

Table 1.2.1 — Vowels
Letter	Sound	Example
a	“ah” as in father	aso (dog)
e	“eh” as in bed	ate (older sister)
i	“ee” as in machine	isda (fish)
o	“oh”, pure, as in fork without the glide	oo (yes)
u	“oo” as in food	ulan (rain)

Two vowels together are usually pronounced as separate syllables: pa-a-lam, ka-i-bi-gan. The exceptions are the glides aw, iw, ay, oy, uy, which sit inside one syllable: araw (sun), bahay (house), apoy (fire).

Consonants

Most consonants sound like English. These are the ones that differ:

Table 1.2.2 — Consonants to watch
Letter	How to say it	Example
ng	One sound, as in sing. It can start a word: say “sing” and drop the si.	ngayon (now), mga (plural marker, said “ma-NGA”)
r	A quick tap of the tongue, like the middle of butter in American English	araw (day)
t, d	Tongue touches the back of the teeth; no puff of air	tatay (father)
p, k	No puff of air, like the p in spin	kape (coffee)
h	Light breathy “h”, always pronounced	bahay
w, y	As in English water, yes	walo (eight), yelo (ice)

Consonant clusters are common, especially in loanwords: plato (plate), trabaho (work), kwento (story).

Syllables and Default Stress

Every vowel makes a syllable: ma-ga-ling has three, ba-hay has two because ay is a single glide. Split after each vowel, and between two consonants that meet: mang-ga.

The Penultimate Rule

Unless a word is marked otherwise, stress falls on the second-to-last syllable: BA-hay, ku-MUS-ta, sa-LA-mat, ta-GA-log, ma-RA-ming. Many words break this rule, and the next chapter shows how stress and the glottal stop are written and why they change meaning.

Read these aloud

Table 1.2.3 — Stress practice
Tagalog	Syllables (stress in capitals)	English
Salamat	sa-LA-mat	Thank you
Kumusta	ku-MUS-ta	How are you
Mabuti	ma-BU-ti	Fine / good
Maganda	ma-GAN-da	Beautiful
Tagalog	ta-GA-log	Tagalog
Magandang umaga	ma-gan-DANG u-MA-ga	Good morning

Chapter 1.3

Glottal Stops & Accent Marks

The glottal stop (Tagalog impit) is the tiny catch in your throat in English uh-oh, between the two uh syllables of that phrase. Tagalog uses it constantly, and it is the main reason that words with the same letters can mean different things.

Where the Glottal Stop Occurs

At the end of a word. A word that ends in a vowel may end with a stop: basâ (wet) closes with it.
Between vowels inside a word. paalam, maaga (early), and kaibigan have a small break between the vowels.
After a prefix, where a hyphen shows it: mag-aral (to study), pag-asa (hope), tag-init (dry season).

Four Stress Patterns

Traditional grammar names four patterns, each with its own mark. In ordinary writing the marks are normally left out, so you learn each word’s pattern by listening. The marks are mainly for dictionaries and textbooks like this one.

Table 1.3.1 — Stress and glottal marks
Pattern	Mark	Stress falls on	Ends in glottal stop?	Example
Malumay	none	second-to-last syllable	no	bahay, aso
Malumi	grave ( ` )	second-to-last syllable	yes	rarely written; learn by ear
Mabilis	acute ( ´ )	last syllable	no	hapón, mahál
Maragsa	circumflex ( ^ )	last syllable	yes	basâ, tuyô

Pairs That Differ Only in Stress or Glottal Stop

Table 1.3.2 — Meaning changes
Tagalog	Pronunciation	English
búhay	BU-hay	life
buháy	bu-HAY	alive
bása	BA-sa	read (the verb root)
basâ	ba-SA + glottal stop	wet
pito	PI-to	whistle
pitó	pi-TO	seven
hapon	HA-pon	afternoon
hapón	ha-PON	Japanese person; Japan

Study Habit

When you add a new word to your vocabulary list, write the stress mark with it from the start. Relearning the stress of a word you have said wrongly for months is much harder than learning it correctly once.

Chapter 1.4

Basic Sentence Structure

Tagalog sentences begin with the predicate, the part that says what is happening or what the topic is like. The topic (marked by ang or si) follows. Think “Ate: the bread. Is eating: the child.” rather than “The child is eating.”

The Main Sentence Types

Table 1.4.1 — Core patterns
Type	Pattern	Tagalog	English
Action	Verb + actor	Kumain ako.	I ate.
Action + object	Verb + actor + ng object	Kumain ako ng mangga.	I ate a mango.
Action, topic marked	Verb + ng actor + ang topic	Kinain ng bata ang mangga.	The child ate the mango.
Noun predicate	Noun + topic	Guro ako.	I am a teacher.
Adjective predicate	Adjective + topic	Maganda ang bahay.	The house is beautiful.
Location	Nasa + place + topic	Nasa palengke si Ana.	Ana is at the market.
Existence / having	May + thing	May aso ako.	I have a dog.
Absence	Wala + thing	Walang tubig.	There is no water.
Question	Question word first	Saan ka pupunta?	Where are you going?

Tagalog has no word for “is/am/are”. A noun, adjective, or location can be a complete predicate on its own: Pagod ako literally “tired I”.

The Ay Inversion

You can also put the topic first and link it to the predicate with ay, the way English does. It sounds more formal and is common in writing and speeches: Ang bata ay kumakain. = Kumakain ang bata. Both mean “The child is eating.”

Short Pronouns and Particles Take Second Position

Small words (na, pa, ba, po, din, and the short pronouns ko, mo, ka) go right after the first word of the sentence. When both a pronoun and a particle appear, one-syllable pronouns come first; two-syllable pronouns come after the particle.

Table 1.4.2 — Second-position order
Tagalog	Pattern	English
Kumain ka na.	verb + ka + na	You have eaten.
Kumain na ako.	verb + na + ako	I have eaten.
Kumain ka na ba?	verb + ka + na + ba	Have you eaten yet?
Salamat po.	word + po	Thank you (respectfully).

Linking Describing Words

An adjective and the noun it describes are joined by the linker na, which becomes -ng after a vowel: magandang bahay (beautiful house), mabait na bata (kind child). The plural marker mga comes before the noun: mga bata (children).

Build It in Three Steps

1) Choose the predicate (verb, noun, adjective, may, wala). 2) Add the small pronoun or particle straight after it. 3) Add the topic with ang or si. Practice with Kumakain + ako + ng kanin.

Chapter 1.5

Pronunciation Practice Guide

This chapter is a set of reading-aloud drills. Do each set slowly first, then at natural speed. Say the words out loud; silent reading will not train your mouth. Where possible, compare yourself with a native speaker or with audio from a dictionary or video source.

Drill A — Pure Vowels

Keep each vowel steady and short: a-e-i-o-u → aso, ate, isda, oo, ulan → mama, kape, libro, bola, mura. Check that o does not become “oh-w” and e does not become “ay”.

Drill B — The ng Sound

Start with a hummed “ng” (the end of sing), then add a vowel: nga, ngi, ngo. Then: ngayon, ngiti (smile), ngipin (tooth), mangga, bangka, sungay. Contrast ng with n + g: mangga is MANG-ga, not man-GA.

Drill C — Vowels Side by Side

Pause lightly between the vowels: pa-alam, maaga, kaibigan, paano, saan, kuwarto. Then with hyphens: mag-aral, pag-ibig, mag-isa (alone).

Drill D — Stress Pairs

Say each pair twice, exaggerating the difference: búhay / buháy, bása / basâ, pito / pitó, hapon / hapón. Then use them: Basa ang damit. (The clothes are wet.) · Pitong tao. (Seven people.)

Drill E — Whole Phrases

Table 1.5.1 — Read aloud
Tagalog	Syllables (stress in capitals)	English
Kumusta po kayo?	ku-MUS-ta po KA-yo	How are you? (polite)
Magandang umaga po.	ma-gan-DANG u-MA-ga po	Good morning.
Maraming salamat po.	ma-RA-ming sa-LA-mat po	Thank you very much.
Ingat po.	I-ngat po	Take care.
Pasensya na po.	pa-SEN-sya na po	Sorry / excuse me.
Tulong!	TU-long	Help!

Self-Check Routine

Record yourself reading Table 1.5.1 and listen back for flat vowels, a missing ng, and misplaced stress.
Shadow a native speaker: play a short line, pause, and repeat it with the same rhythm.
Keep a list of words you stumble on and revisit it each week.
Remember Tagalog is syllable-timed: give each syllable roughly equal length.

Why This Part Comes Early

These four chapters give learners a complete, usable conversational loop — greeting, introducing, being polite, and asking for help — before any formal grammar study begins.

Chapter 2.1

Greetings and Goodbyes

The Universal Greeting: Kumusta?

If you learn only one Tagalog word, make it Kumusta? Borrowed from the Spanish ¿Cómo está? and fully naturalized, it is used at any time of day, with anyone. The variant Kamusta? (with a) is also correct in casual speech.

Table 2.1.1 — Greeting Someone
Tagalog	English	When to Use
Kumusta?	How are you? / Hi.	Any time.
Kumusta ka?	How are you? (one peer)	Casual, singular.
Kumusta po?	How are you? (polite)	To elders, strangers.
Kumusta kayo?	How are you? (plural/polite)	To a group.
Kumusta na?	How have you been?	After a long absence.

Common Responses

Mabuti naman. — I’m fine.
Okay lang. — Just okay.
Eto, buhay pa. — Still alive (playful).
Ikaw? / Kayo? — And you?

The Reciprocity Rule

Always return a greeting with Ikaw? or Kayo?. Skipping this return question feels abrupt — a small detail that marks a foreigner as fluent in more than just words.

Time-of-Day Greetings

All built on maganda (“beautiful”). Where English says “Good morning,” Tagalog literally says “beautiful morning.”

Table 2.1.2 — Greetings by Time
Tagalog	English	Time
Magandang umaga	Good morning	~5 a.m. – noon
Magandang tanghali	Good midday	~11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Magandang hapon	Good afternoon	~1 – 6 p.m.
Magandang gabi	Good evening / night	~6 p.m. onward

Add po for politeness: Magandang umaga po.

Informal Greetings

Uy! / Oi! / Hoy! — “Hey!” (varying intensity)
Pre / Pare — “Bro” (between close male friends)
Mars / Mare — “Girl / Sis” (between close female friends)
Bes / Beshie — “Bestie” (modern youth slang)

Saying Goodbye

Table 2.1.3 — Ways to Say Goodbye
Tagalog	English	Register
Paalam	Goodbye	Formal. Add po for elders.
Ingat	Take care	Warm and everyday — most common.
Ingat po kayo	Please take care	Polite, to elders or groups.
Kita tayo mamaya	See you later	Between friends and colleagues.
Mauna na ako	I’ll go first	Polite way to excuse yourself.
Babay!	Bye-bye!	Casual, borrowed from English.

A Cultural Note on Mauna na ako

Filipinos rarely say “I’m leaving now” directly. Mauna na ako — literally “I’ll go ahead” — is a softer way to excuse yourself. It implies that others are staying and you are merely departing first.

Sample Dialogue — Meeting a Neighbor

A casual morning greeting

Ana: Magandang umaga po, Aling Rosa!
Aling Rosa: Magandang umaga, Ana. Kumusta ka?
Ana: Mabuti naman po. Kayo?
Aling Rosa: Eto, okay lang. Ingat ka, ha.
Ana: Opo. Paalam po!

Chapter 2.2

Introducing Yourself

The Core Pattern: Ako si...

Two frames: Ako si + name (informal) or Ang pangalan ko ay + name (formal). Si is the marker for personal names — for common nouns, Tagalog uses ang instead.

Table 2.2.1 — Self-Introduction
Tagalog	English
Ako si Maria.	I am Maria.
Ako po si Maria.	I am Maria. (polite)
Ang pangalan ko ay Maria.	My name is Maria.
Ano ang pangalan mo?	What is your name?
Ano po ang pangalan ninyo?	What is your name? (very polite)

Saying Where You Are From: Taga... ako

The prefix taga- means “from” or “native of.” Same prefix that gives Tagalog its name (taga-ilog = “river dweller”).

Taga-Maynila ako. — I’m from Manila.
Taga-Cebu ako. — I’m from Cebu.
Taga-Amerika ako. — I’m from America.
Taga-saan ka? — Where are you from?
Taga-saan po kayo? — Where are you from? (polite)

Age and Work

Age: [number] na ako — e.g., Trenta na ako (“I’m thirty”). Ask: Ilang taon ka na?

Work: profession + ako — e.g., Guro ako (“I am a teacher”), Doktor ako, Estudyante ako, Nars ako, Inhinyero ako. Ask: Ano ang trabaho mo?

Chapter 2.3

Polite Words & Courtesy

The Magic of Po

No single word carries as much social weight as po. It is a politeness particle with no direct English translation. Add it to any sentence to signal respect.

Without po

Salamat.: Thanks.
Kumusta ka?: How are you?
Oo.: Yeah.

With po

Salamat po.: Thank you (respectful).
Kumusta po?: How are you? (respectful).
Opo.: Yes (respectful).

When to Use Po

With elders, parents, teachers, strangers, officials, customers, anyone older, and anyone in authority. When in doubt, use po. There is no penalty for being too polite in Tagalog.

Thanks, Apologies, Requests

Table 2.3.1 — Courtesy Phrases
Tagalog	English
Salamat.	Thank you.
Maraming salamat po.	Thank you very much. (respectful)
Walang anuman.	You’re welcome.
Pasensya na.	Sorry / Excuse me (mild).
Patawad.	I’m sorry (asking forgiveness).
Paki-usap po.	Please. (asking a favor)
Pakisuyo po.	Please help me with this.
Puwede po ba?	May I? / Is it possible?
Paumanhin po.	Excuse me / Pardon me.

Cultural Note — Utang na Loob

Filipino gratitude runs deeper than a simple salamat. Utang na loob (“debt of the inner self”) describes a moral obligation to return kindness. Accepting help creates a lasting bond.

Chapter 2.4

Emergency & Survival Expressions

Calling for Help

Tulong! — Help!
Saklolo! — Help! (more dramatic)
Pulis! / Doktor! / Sunog! / Magnanakaw! — Police! / Doctor! / Fire! / Thief!

National emergency hotline: 911.

When You Don’t Understand

Hindi ko naiintindihan. — I don’t understand.
Hindi ko alam. — I don’t know.
Paki-ulit nga po. — Please say that again.
Dahan-dahan lang po. — Slowly, please.
May nagsasalita ba ng Ingles? — Does anyone speak English?

Asking Directions: Nasaan ang...?

Nasaan ang CR? — Where is the restroom?
Nasaan ang ospital? — Where is the hospital?
Nasaan ang paliparan? — Where is the airport?
Nasaan ang ATM? — Where is the ATM?

Saan vs. Nasaan

Nasaan asks where a person or thing is: Nasaan ang CR?, Nasaan ka? Saan asks where an action happens or is headed: Saan ka pupunta?, Saan ka nakatira? You will also hear Saan ang CR? in casual speech, but Nasaan is the standard form for “where is…?”

Directions Vocabulary

kaliwa — left
kanan — right
diretso — straight ahead
kanto — corner
malapit — near
malayo — far

The Vocabulary Backbone

Everyday vocabulary is where a language moves from greeting to living. The ten chapters in this part supply the words used in almost every conversation. Learn them as small systems — numbers as a counting system, family terms as a kinship map, weather as fixed expressions.

Chapter 3.1

Numbers 1–1000 & Currency

Two Number Systems

Tagalog has two parallel systems. The native system (isa, dalawa, tatlo…) is used for counting objects. The Spanish-derived system (uno, dos, tres…) is used for money, time, ages, and dates — a legacy of more than three centuries of colonial rule.

Table 3.1.1 — Numbers 1–10
#	Native	Spanish-Derived
1	isa	uno
2	dalawa	dos
3	tatlo	tres
4	apat	kuwatro
5	lima	singko
6	anim	sais
7	pito	siyete
8	walo	otso
9	siyam	nuwebe
10	sampu	diyes

Teens use -labing-: labing-isa (11), labindalawa (12), labintatlo (13), labing-apat (14)… Tens use -pu: dalawampu (20), tatlumpu (30), apatnapu (40), limampu (50), animnapu (60), pitumpu (70), walumpu (80), siyamnapu (90), isandaan (100). Compounds join with ’t: dalawampu’t isa (21). Thousands: libo.

Ordinals use ika-: una (first, irregular), ikalawa, ikatlo, ika-apat, ikalima.

Currency — Philippine Peso

pera — money

Chapter 3.3

Family Members & Kinship Terms

Family is the center of Filipino life, and Tagalog kinship terms are unusually specific — there are different words for older brother vs. younger brother, and honorifics for every generation.

Chapter 3.10

Common Adjectives & Modifiers

The ma- Adjective Pattern

Adding the prefix ma- turns a root into a descriptive word. Recognizing this pattern lets you form new adjectives as soon as you learn a root.

Table 3.10.1 — Root → Adjective
Root	Meaning	Adjective
laki	size	malaki — big
liit	smallness	maliit — small
ganda	beauty	maganda — beautiful
buti	goodness	mabuti — good

What’s Next

With numbers, time, family, food, body, places, weather, and adjectives in hand, you now have the vocabulary backbone of Tagalog. Part 4 turns to the grammar core — the markers Ang, Ng, Sa, pronouns, verbs, aspect, focus, negation, questions, and the small particles that give Tagalog its expressive texture.

Chapter 4.1

Tagalog Markers: Ang, Ng, Sa

Markers tell the listener how a noun phrase functions in the sentence. They are not simply direct translations of English articles. Learn the marker together with the phrase it introduces.

Table 4.1.1 — The Three Core Marker Families
Marker	Common Role	Example
ang	Marks the focused/topic noun phrase.	Ang bata ay kumakain. — The child is eating.
ng	Marks a non-focused noun phrase, including many objects and possessors.	Kumakain ng mangga ang bata. — The child is eating mango.
sa	Marks many locations, destinations, recipients, and other oblique relations.	Pumunta siya sa paaralan. — He/she went to school.
si / ni / kay	Personal-name counterparts of ang / ng / sa.	Kumakain si Ana. — Ana is eating. Ibinigay ko ang libro kay Ana. — I gave the book to Ana.

A Useful Habit

Do not memorize ang = the, ng = of, and sa = to as fixed equations. Instead, notice what role the noun phrase plays and which marker the sentence pattern requires.

Chapter 4.2

Pronouns & Groupings

Table 4.2.1 — Core Personal Pronouns
Role	Singular	Plural / Polite
Ang-form	ako / ikaw / siya	kami, tayo, kayo, sila
Ng-form	ko / mo / niya	namin, natin, ninyo, nila
Sa-form	akin / iyo / kaniya (also kanya)	amin, atin, inyo, kanila

One important distinction is kami versus tayo. Both mean “we,” but kami excludes the listener while tayo includes the listener.

Table 4.2.2 — Demonstratives (this / that)
Meaning	Ang-form	Ng-form	Sa-form (place)
this (near me)	ito	nito	dito (here)
that (near you)	iyan	niyan	diyan
that (far from both)	iyon	niyon	doon (over there)

Examples: Ano ito? (What is this?) · Nasaan iyon? (Where is that?) · Kunin mo iyan. (Take that.)

Chapter 4.3

Common Verbs & Infinitive Forms

Tagalog verbs are built from roots plus affixes. Start with a small set of productive roots rather than trying to memorize every conjugated form at once.

Table 4.3.1 — High-Frequency Verb Roots
Root	Useful Form	Meaning
kain	kumain	eat
inom	uminom	drink
punta	pumunta	go
tulog	matulog	sleep
luto	magluto	cook
basa	bumasa	read

Chapter 4.4

Verb Aspects

Tagalog commonly describes an action as completed, uncompleted, or contemplated. This is more useful for beginners than forcing every verb into English-style past, present, and future labels.

Table 4.4.1 — A Simple Aspect Set
Aspect	Example	Meaning
Completed	Kumain ako.	I ate / I have eaten.
Uncompleted	Kumakain ako.	I am eating / I eat.
Contemplated	Kakain ako.	I will eat / I am going to eat.

Chapter 4.5

Actor Focus vs. Object Focus

Focus is one of the central ideas in Tagalog grammar. In an actor-focused clause, the actor is the grammatical pivot; in an object-focused clause, the affected object is foregrounded. Affixes and sentence markers work together to show the pattern.

Actor Focus

Example: Magluluto si Ana ng adobo.
Meaning: Ana will cook adobo.
Pattern: mag- / um- families are common actor-focus patterns.

Object Focus

Example: Iluluto ni Ana ang adobo.
Meaning: Ana will cook the adobo.
Pattern: -in- / -i- families occur in object-focused patterns.

Chapter 4.6

Negatives

Table 4.6.1 — Three Everyday Negators
Negator	Main Use	Example
hindi	Negates statements, actions, or identification.	Hindi ako pagod. — I am not tired.
wala	Expresses absence or non-existence.	Walang tubig. — There is no water.
huwag	Negative command.	Huwag kang tumakbo. — Don’t run.

Chapter 4.7

Questions

Table 4.7.1 — Core Question Words
Tagalog	English	Example
ano	what	Ano ito?
sino	who	Sino siya?
saan	where	Saan ka pupunta?
kailan	when	Kailan ka aalis?
bakit	why	Bakit ka malungkot?
paano	how	Paano ito gawin?

The yes/no question particle ba usually follows the first constituent: Kumain ka ba? — “Did you eat?”

Chapter 4.8

Essential Enclitic Particles

Table 4.8.1 — Small Words, Big Nuances
Particle	Typical Function	Example
po	Respect / politeness	Salamat po.
ba	Yes/no question	Okay ka ba?
na	Already / now	Kumain na ako.
pa	Still / yet	Kumakain pa ako.
naman	Softens, contrasts, or redirects	Ikaw naman.
din/rin	Also / too	Ako rin.

Extra Practice · Part 4

Marker & Aspect Mini-Drills

Work these without looking at the tables. Then check the Reference answer key.

Drill A — Choose the marker

1. ___ aso ay tumatakbo. (The dog is running.)

Ang aso ay tumatakbo.

2. Bumili ako ___ tinapay. (I bought bread.)

Bumili ako ng tinapay.

3. Pupunta kami ___ Cebu. (We will go to Cebu.)

Pupunta kami sa Cebu.

4. ___ pangalan niya ay Marco. (His name is Marco.)

Ang pangalan niya ay Marco.

Drill B — Aspect: completed / uncompleted / contemplated

Give all three forms for each root (actor-focus patterns you know):

5. kain (eat)

kumain / kumakain / kakain

6. inom (drink)

uminom / umiinom / iinom

7. punta (go)

pumunta / pumupunta / pupunta

8. luto with mag- (cook)

nagluto / nagluluto / magluluto

Drill C — Focus contrast

9. Rewrite with object focus if possible: Magluluto si Ana ng adobo.

Object-focus: Iluluto ni Ana ang adobo.

10. Who is the focused participant in: Kinain ng bata ang mangga.?

Focused: ang mangga (patient).

Study tip

When a sentence feels “backwards” compared with English, check the marker on the topic phrase first. Tagalog often puts the focused noun after the verb, marked with ang (or si for personal names).

Part 4 Exercise

Grammar Core

Try each item aloud before revealing the answer.

Exercise — Part 4
#	Task	Answer
1	Choose the marker: Bumili siya ___ isda.

Conversation Method

Each chapter follows the same pattern: learn a small set of reusable frames, notice the politeness level, then substitute your own names, places, times, and objects. Fluency grows faster from flexible sentence frames than from memorizing isolated dialogues.

Chapter 5.1

At Home & Daily Routines

Table 5.1.1 — Daily Routine Frames
Tagalog	English
Gumigising ako ng alas-sais.	I wake up at six.
Kumakain na kami.	We are eating now / We’re eating already.

Chapter 5.2

At School & Classroom Dialogues

Asking a teacher

Student: Ma’am, puwede po bang magtanong?
Teacher: Opo, ano iyon?
Student: Ano po ang ibig sabihin nito?
Teacher: Ibig sabihin nito ay “example.”

Useful classroom frames include Puwede po bang...? (“May I...?/Is it possible to...”), Ano po ang ibig sabihin...? (“What does ... mean?”), and Pakiulit po. (“Please repeat.”).

Ipapaalam ko po.	I’ll let you know.	Professional follow-up.

Chapter 5.4

Shopping & Bargaining (Tawad)

Magkano? asks the price. When bargaining is appropriate, keep the tone friendly and frame the request as a question rather than a demand.

Bargaining Frame

Pwede bang tawaran? — “Can the price be negotiated?” Last price na po? — “Is that your final price?”

Chapter 5.5

Ordering Food & Dining Out

Chapter 5.6

Taking Public Transportation

Common terms include jeepney, tricycle, bus, sakay (ride/get on), baba (get off/go down), bayad (payment), and pamasahe (fare).

Getting on

Frame: Papunta po sa [lugar].
Ask: Dadaan po ba sa [lugar]?

Getting off

Frame: Para po!
Meaning: Stop, please! / I’m getting off.

Table 5.8.1 — Useful Digital Phrases
Phrase	Meaning
Nasaan ka na?	Where are you now?
On the way na ako.	I’m already on the way.
Message kita mamaya.	I’ll message you later.

On Untranslatable Words

Some of the most revealing Tagalog words have no single English equivalent. Chapter 6.5 treats these as cultural concepts first and vocabulary second — the surest route to using them naturally.

Chapter 6.1

Manners, Respect & Elders

Respect is expressed through vocabulary, pronouns, tone, and behavior. Po and opo are important linguistic signals, while pagmamano is a traditional gesture of respect toward elders.

Table 6.1.1 — Respectful Language
Expression	Function	Context
po	Politeness/respect particle	With elders, strangers, authority figures, and formal interactions.
opo	Respectful “yes”	Often in response to an elder or authority figure.
Kuya	Older brother / respectful address to an older male	Family and everyday social settings.
Ate	Older sister / respectful address to an older female	Family and everyday social settings.
Mano po	Respectful greeting associated with pagmamano	Traditional greeting toward elders.

Chapter 6.2

Family Values & Bayanihan

Family vocabulary often extends beyond the nuclear household. Terms such as tito, tita, lolo, and lola are useful in everyday conversation, while kinship terms can also become forms of address.

Family

Immediate: nanay/mama, tatay/papa, kuya, ate, anak
Extended: lolo, lola, tito, tita, pinsan

Bayanihan

Core idea: Community cooperation and mutual assistance.
Language cue: Tulungan tayo. — Let’s help each other.

Chapter 6.3

Common Colloquialisms & Expressions

Informal speech changes quickly, so the goal is to recognize common conversational forms without assuming that every slang expression belongs in every setting.

Table 6.3.1 — Informal Expressions
Expression	Approximate English	Register
Uy!	Hey!	Casual
Sige.	Okay / Go ahead.	Everyday
Ayos!	Great! / Nice!	Casual
Grabe!	Wow! / That’s intense!	Casual
Joke lang.	Just kidding.	Casual
Bahala na.	We’ll see / Leave it to fate.	Context-dependent

Chapter 6.4

Food Culture & Dining Etiquette

Food and hospitality are closely connected in Filipino social life. Meals may be shared, guests are often encouraged to eat, and accepting an offer of food can be part of warm social interaction.

A Useful Social Phrase

Kain tayo! literally means “Let’s eat!” It can function as both a real invitation and a friendly expression of hospitality.

Table 6.4.1 — Dining Language
Tagalog	English
Kain tayo!	Let’s eat!
Busog na ako.	I’m full.
Masarap!	Delicious!
Dagdagan ko?	Shall I add more?
Salamat po.	Thank you.

Chapter 6.5

Idiomatic & Culturally Rich Expressions

Table 6.5.1 — Words That Need Context
Word	Working Sense	Nuance
gigil	Strong urge to squeeze or pinch something cute	Often discussed as a distinctive emotional reaction.
kilig	Romantic excitement / butterflies	Commonly associated with attraction or a sweet romantic moment.
